Non Toxic Herbicides: The Safer Choice

If you choose to use weed killers, consider non toxic herbicides. There are alternatives to toxic weed killers!

Corn Gluten Weed Killer: Corn gluten works as a pre-emergent weed killer by preventing the weed roots from developing. It should be applied in early spring and again in early August. The cornmeal will also act as a nitrogen fertilizer. It is effective against most garden and lawn weeds and a good choice for as a non toxic herbicide.

How safe is corn-gluten meal? Currently, it is sold as feed for cattle, poultry, fish, and is the base for many dog foods. It's a by-product of the wet-milling process for corn.

It will not kill weeds that are already established, but it will kill any weed seeds that are ready to germinate. To use it as a pre-emergent you must spread it before the weeds germinate, which means in early spring.

Herbicidal Soap: An environmentally friendly way to kill weeds. Weed-Aside Weed Killer, available exclusively from the Gardens Alive! catalog, kills weeds and then quickly decomposes in the soil.

Weed-Aside is an herbicidal soap that contains a blend of naturally occurring fatty acids. Weed-Aside controls broadleaf weeds, annual grassy weeds, mosses, algae and lichens. It won’t stain brick or paving, and you can sow seed or set out transplants in treated areas five days after application.

Homemade Non Toxic Herbicides

The Potato Chip Solution: Vinegar and salt is great for places where you won't be growing anything in the near future. Spray directly on plants.

The Hot Bath Solution: To remove young plants, pour boiling water directly on them. This is the simplest, yet safest herbicide there is. Just be careful to avoid plants that you don't want to damage.

The Soda Pop Solution: Pour cola on the cracks in the sidewalk to kill weeds. It's sticky, but within a week the weeds will be dead.

The Cocktail Solution: Spray some gin mixed with a bit of apple cider vinegar and water on your weeds being careful to avoid other plants.
