Practical Horsekeeping News, Issue #018 January 01, 2009 |
Hello Again! Happy New Year! Wow — 2009! That was a quick decade. We've had our first major snow here in the Northeast. The horses love it, but they don't have to shovel! If you live in an area where it snows, you many notice red spots in the snow when your horse urinates. That can be pretty scary since it looks like blood. But in almost all cases, it's not blood. Normal horse urine sometimes turns red or brown after standing for a while. This is due to the presence of oxidizing agents in the urine. Passing blood in the urine is pretty rare, and it would be accompanied by signs of illness or distress such as frequent urination, straining or fever. Tip Of The Day: Consider adding additional bedding to your horse's stall to keep things cozy. A few extra inches will really help insulate against cold floors and drafts. Don't forget to stop by our Amazon store for the best gifts for horse lovers!
