Practical Horsekeeping News, Issue #017 December 15, 2008 |
Hello Again! Happy Holidays from the Practical Horsekeepers! OK. You winterized the tractor and the truck. Did you winterize your horse's hooves? You might want to consider pulling your horse's shoes if you live in an area that gets snow and ice. Unshod hooves offer better traction and are not as likely to become ice packed. Trim hooves every six to eight weeks to prevent cracks and breakage. Frozen, uneven ground can traumatize the sole, so be on the lookout for bruising or laminitis. Tip Of The Day: It's getting dark pretty early these days. Stumbling around the barn can lead to accidents. An easy solution? Mark those danger spots with fluorescent duct tape Don't forget to stop by our Amazon store for the best gifts for horse lovers!
