Types Of Horse Fencing
Horse fencing is necessary to safely confine horses yet provide them with the opportunity to exercise and graze. Because of the natural flight response of horses, they tend to injure themselves in fences more than most other livestock, so it's important that the fence be highly visible to the horse. When making a selection, consider utility (keeping the horses in), safety and cost. There are several options available for containing your horse. Once you've decided on a suitable plan, you'll need to choose a material.
Electric: Hot wire fencing is safe, inexpensive, very effective and can look great. Electric fence can be added to other fence types to make them more effective for containing horses. It also discourages chewing or cribbing on the fence. It's important that electric fencing be installed and grounded properly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and you'll have an effective, long lasting system. Monofilament: High-tensile wire can withstand over one thousand pounds of livestock pressure without losing its elasticity; yet the wire is flexible enough to bend, wrap, and knot during construction. It is strong, flexible and highly visible. Virtually no maintenance is required if installed correctly. In the case of a brush fire, monofilament containment systems will melt, allowing the horses to escape. Steel: Very strong and durable, galvanized and powder coated steel fence will provide decades of maintenance free protection for your horses. Steel fencing is easy to install and comes in a variety of colors and styles. Wood: Traditional wood has a great, natural look. It's easy to install and repair using basic tools. But with that beautiful, aged look comes maintenance including painting, rot management and mold prevention. Plastic coated wood and man made wood have the strength of wood but reduce or eliminate these maintenance issues. Vinyl Fence: Virtually maintenance free, relatively easy to install and beautiful. Vinyl has become very popular with color pigment goes all the way through the material giving it a bright but natural look. Vinyl is strong and your horse is much less likely to crib on vinyl fencing. Available in a variety of colors and configurations. Portable: Portable horse fence lets you pasture your horse safely, anywhere. It's also a great pasture management tool; you can move your horses around to avoid over grazing. Most systems go up quickly and are easy to move.
