Got A Hay Belly?

A hay belly may or may not be associated with true equine obesity. Hay bellies are a distension of the abdomen due to the volume of grass or hay the horse consumes. Many horses exhibit hay bellies without a build-up of body fat. It's a little like the equine equivalent of the human beer belly.

To eliminate a bulging belly, you need to reduce the total volume of feed. A well-balanced, complete feed can reduce total volume without adversely affecting the amount of fiber and nutrients needed for proper digestion and nutrition.

Distended bellies may also be a sign of an equine parasite infection. Consult with your veterinarian about proper deworming protocols.

This isn't the most serious threat to horse health, but it may be a sign that you need to upgrade the quality of your horse hay, pasture or horse feed.
