Electric Tape Fence: Visible And Economical

Similar to electric wire fence, electric tape fence and electric rope provides greater visibility, a plus for your horse.

Electric tape horse fence consists one or more strands (usually three to five for horses) of a polyester tape interwoven with metal and powered by a specialized charging device. A memorable but harmless shock is delivered when any animal (two or four footed) touches the fence while simultaneously touching the ground.

This type of barrier is psychological rather than physical. Your horse could push through it but the "shock value" keeps him from trying. Use this type of fence in conjunction with wood, vinyl or no climb to reduce wear and tear damage.

More than expensive than electric wire fence, tape is still a bargain. It's easy to install and the metal line posts can be driven into the ground by hand.

A big benefit of electric tape horse fence over plain wire is visibility. If your horse can see it (and remember that less-than-pleasant shock) he's less likely to accidentally run into it. And unlike steel wire, it probably won't cut your horse if he does.

Solar and battery fence chargers are available for electric fence, so it's a good option for temporary or remote installations. Use it to control grazing patterns for better pasture.

Check electric tape horse fence regularly for voltage. It needs to be "shocking" in order to work. If the voltage gets low, your horse may figure it out and waltz right through.

Weed control is very important. Wet vegetation will drain voltage from the fence.

Your horse needs to be trained to respect the fence. Yes, this means he needs a few zaps to learn the principle of a psychological barrier.

Electric tape horse fence should last about 10 years. Electric rope horse fence may last 15. After that time, the fibers begin to break down and the fence be needs to be replaced. The posts should be fine, so replacement is less costly and time consuming than new installation.

The charger is the most important feature of your fence. Buy a bigger one than you think you need; a larger charger will help prevent voltage drops from weeds and let you add more fence if needed.

When buying electric tape fence, look for a fence that uses both tinned copper and stainless steel filaments. Bare copper can corrode when it contacts other metals. Be sure that your electric tape horse fence is coated with UV inhibitors.
